Time once again for the Kentucky Toyota Trail Ride. After breaking my truck last year, this is my first organized ride and I was a little nervous. It was a very wet weekend and I knew anything goes when the mud is stirred up, so I put on a brave face and headed to Callie’s Campground. I cautiously joined a group of drivers in the "Easy” group and as it turned out, I knew almost everyone going. I felt much better knowing everyone had my back.
It rained off and on but overall was a beautiful day and we spent the first half of the ride taking in the lush tropical landscape and rolling creeks. All the old familiar gravel roads and crossings had the difficulty kicked up one notch.
Lunch was hot and we got to fly the drones around a bit as we mingled and refueled the trucks and our stomachs. After some discussion it was decided to head to Spaas Creek to finish out the ride. Spaas is a great trail and in these wet conditions, I somehow forgot to care about breaking my truck and couldn’t wait to hit the backroads. As it turned out, the skies soon opened and after navigating half of Spaas, we turned around in order to make it back to camp in time for the raffle. The trails were rivers as water splashed, crashed and poured from every direction as we made our way out.
I managed to make it out fishing but had no luck hooking up. The Red was muddy and moving swiftly, just up over its banks enough to make me nervous. I’ve struck out there the past couple visits because of the sheer volume of water and the low clarity. Hoping to catch a hoss next time.
