On my list of must-do’s for this West Virginia visit was High Falls of the Cheat River. I’m not an obsessive waterfall chaser, more of an arch guy, but I can appreciate them more now that I fish.
The challenging hike itself was unexpectedly scenic. Abrupt transitions from thick woods to open meadows, to railroad tracks and roaring 100 foot wide waterfalls. I did manage to squeeze in some fishing but had no luck. The area was a busy spot with sightseers and swimmers riding the old train that still runs up and down the mountain every day.
Evidently the route also qualifies as a horse trail as I was behind at least half a dozen riders on my return trip. Their horse trailer filled my rearview for the drive as well. The road to this area is a giant dirt road that looks like it was poured in place. Really aesthetic effect out here in the mountains. The truck ate it up on this dry day but I wondered what it would be like after a month of rain and was glad for the perfect weather.
